What they got was a villain so good, so delicious to watch on screen, Marvel and Kevin Feige just had to bring him back almost 20 years later. Electro joined Green Goblin in a battle against the three Spider-Men, until he was finally defeated and cured by Doctor Octopus, before reconciling with his native Spider-Man, and being sent back to his universe. But just how did the the Academy Award Nominated actor and a director with comedy horror roots make the Green Goblin so terrifying and, frankly, goofy? So let's take a look at how heroes and villains work together on screen and how one of the best performances on superhero celluloid came to be.įor Tobey Maguire's first outing as Spider-Man, Sam Raimi and co needed a perfect thematic foil and found it in the post Y2K, post dot-com bubble tech infused counterpoint to a Peter Parker that's more organic, with his naturally produced web, a departure from the mechanical web shooters Tom Holland has in Homecoming, Far From Home, No Way Home and the rest of the MCU and with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man series. But in 2002, Willem Dafoe and Sam Raimi created a version of the character so iconic, that it's not a stretch to call it definitive. After making his grand return to the iconic role of Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which appeared like the perfect swansong for Dafoe as Osborn, it seems that the actor isn’t done with the character. All the way back to the 1960s and the villains Silver Age origins. Willem Dafoe Willem Dafoe is open to the idea of returning as Green Goblin. At the end of the day, the Goblin is a power-hungry sadist. As such, this would be a dynamic and very dark story, building upon the actions of the Goblin from No Way Home. Whether it's Norman Osborn or his son Harry who's also been the Green Goblin both on the page and screen, one can imagine the poetic irony to be had from a plot where Spider-Man becomes so fearful about what an Osborn might become that he inadvertently creates the MCU's Green Goblin himself. However, there could then be major consequences if Spider-Man is in fact unable to do so. This would then create a scenario in which Spider-Man would need to compartmentalize his trauma and bitterness toward the first Goblin he met, rather than projecting them onto this new version. As such, the possible emergence of a Green Goblin from his own reality would undoubtedly create some major conflict within Peter.Īn arc where Peter Parker meets the main MCU Norman Osborn has large amounts of narrative potential, especially if this version of Osborn has yet to become the Green Goblin. While that's certainly something Peter will be working through and seems to have initially processed by the end of No Way Home, the consequences of the spell required to send all the villains home mean Spider-Man is without any kind of family, friends, or allies going forward. In Norman's case, this involved curing him of the serum in his system that had been causing the Goblin persona to take over his mind.Ĭlearly, this multiversal Green Goblin made a massive impact on the MCU's Peter Parker in ways he'll never forget, leaving Spider-Man with intense darkness and trauma after the murder of his Aunt May. Likewise, all the multiversal villains were sent back to their own realities after they had all been cured. At the end of No Way Home, Tom Holland's Spider-Man was prepared to kill the Green Goblin out of revenge, though he was thankfully stopped by Tobey Maguire's Webslinger.
